Archbishop Beck has a highly successful track record in competing in public speaking competitions nationally. In addition, this year we were delighted to introduce an internal debating programme with over 160 students involved in debate.
The lead up to the competition was tense with students displaying some remarkable talent. Year 7 and 8 students grappled with a range of thought-provoking and often contentious issues, such as Single-Sex Schools, China s One Child Policy and Euthanasia. Two students qualified from each category and pitted their wits against their peers in our Public Speaking Competition in July.
The performance of all speakers was outstanding; they were confident, consistent and articulate in presenting their viewpoints. The judges were particularly impressed with the range of questions offered from the floor, commenting on the speakers ability to respond to new ideas, while linking them to their original argument. Awards were given for Best Speaker, Outstanding Personality and Runner Up.
The programme provides challenge and inspiration for students to explore the concepts and issues that underpin the policies that govern contemporary society.
